bigee.net is online!

Dec. 4, 2012

We are excited to announce the launch of bigee.net, a knowledge platform for energy efficiency in buildings, is now live to facilitate the daily work of policy makers and decisions makers in the private sector and many actors in the construction sector. This web platform provides a comprehensive overview of existing know-how on technological solutions and policy options, amended with good practice examples to demonstrate their practicability.

During the launch of bigee.net on 4th of December in Doha, Qatar, the President of the German Federal Environment Agency Jochen Flasbarth stated that "Upscaling energy efficiency is the cheapest, fastest and cleanest energy resource for climate protection in the short and medium term".

This applies particularly to the building sector in fast growing economies characterised by a large increase of the building stock. For this reason, the bigEE project, which is co-ordinated by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (Germany) involves project partners in these countries. Currently, co-operations with partner organisations in China and South Africa are ongoing, while India and Mexico are intended to follow soon. In addition to the general information available on the platform, bigee.net will provide tailored information for these countries such as energy saving potentials differenciated by sector and end-use, economic net benefits and implemented policy instruments. The project receives funding from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

The launch of bigee.net on an off side event during the UN climate negotiations at COP18 in Doha has been attended by numerous international guests and is a new important milestone in the project, since bigee.net provides easily accessible and transparent decision-making support. The platform will be continuously developed and more content will follow.
