Codes & Standards

The following standards and building codes provide requirements and specifications of fenestrations in energy efficient buildings.

Country Standard Remarks
Europe/International EN/ISO 10077-1/2: Thermal performance of windows, doors and shutters – Calculation of thermal transmittance – Part 1: General/Part 2: Numerical method for frames Thermal transmittance of windows and effects of thermal bridging can be captured using these two standards
India Energy Conservation Building Code Holistic building energy code with information minimum requirement for wall, roof and floor insulation for buildings in various climate zones
USA ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2013 - Energy Standard for Bui dings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings Provides minimum window specifications of buildings (among other key indicators that effects energy efficiency in buildings)
USA California Energy Commission – 2008 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Non-residential Buildings. (The new 2013 Standards will go into effect on July 1, 2014) Provides minimum window specifications of buildings (among other key indicators that effects energy efficiency in buildings)
UK CIBSE Guide F: Energy Efficiency in Buildings Holistic guide on energy efficiency in buildings with information on air tightness

Certificates

National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC)

NFRC is a non-profit organization in the USA that provides certification and labelling for window and glazing assemblies such as windows, doors and skylights (NFRC.org, 2016). The performance rating is provided in five categories namely:

  • U-Factors
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
  • Visible Transmittance
  • Air Leakage
  • Condensation resistance
